As landscaping professionals, we at Progreen are preachers of the irrigation gospel. It keeps your plants healthier, saves you time and money, uses less water, and is a greener choice for the environment. In addition, irrigation makes landscaping simpler because you can set yourself a timer and not worry about your plants’ water needs.
But that doesn’t mean your irrigation system doesn’t have needs of its own. True that it should function without intervention, but irrigation inspections on a periodic basis will ensure that your irrigation is fully working as it should.
But why get an irrigation inspection for your Round Rock property? And what should you expect? We’ll tell you in today’s blog.
What Could Go Wrong?
Irrigation is relatively complex. It involves pipes, water, pressure, and the environment. And complex systems in the real world can be unpredictable, as we learned in Michael Chichton’s cautionary tale, Jurassic Park.
While the consequences of malfunctioning sprinklers won’t be as deadly for you as dino security was for Dennis Nedry and Co, it can adversely affect your grass. And it’s often hard to spot until it’s too late.
Austin, We Have a Problem
Unfortunately, usually, the first time people notice they have an irrigation system problem is when they see a spot of dead or yellow grass in their lawn. Unfortunately, that’s not the best time to correct it!
However, there are some other things to watch for. The first thing to know is how your system works when it’s working correctly. Without that, you’ll not notice a difference.
Things to watch for are:
- Zones where water is not coming out of your sprinklers.
- Pools of water around them.
- Places where the water pressure or height of your stream has changed.
An Ounce of Prevention
You know what they say about an ounce of prevention, right? Well, it’s just as true for sprinklers as medicine.
Not only can early catching of an irrigation issue save your lawn. It can also save you money. That’s because it can prevent lawn death (and therefore replacement) as well as problems with your sprinkler system deteriorating.
Most Common Irrigation Problems
As we (and Ian Malcolm) said, it’s impossible to predict all of the potential problems of a complex system as it operates in the real world. But as professional landscapers and irrigation specialists, Progreen has a pretty good idea about the most common issues your irrigation systems may face. They fall into three basic categories: electrical, plumbing, and mechanical.
Electrical
They say water and electricity don’t mix, but with your sprinkler system, they have to. Luckily there are safe ways to use them when you take precautions.
The electrical problems your irrigation system may experience are not typically the electrocution variety! Instead, more commonly, they result from a system no longer working correctly because of a loose or disconnected wire.
The controller may also malfunction, changing the day or time settings.
Plumbing
You may encounter two main types of plumbing problems with your irrigation systems: clogs and leaks. Since your sprinklers are in the ground, it’s easy for dirt to get into them and clog the openings. In addition, leaking can happen from wear and tear over time.
Sometimes you may also run into water pressure problems if there are changes over time.
Mechanical
There are several mechanical components within your irrigation system. The place where you are most likely to have a problem is the spot that is most exposed - your sprinkler heads.
Sprinkler heads stick out of the ground and are vulnerable to passing feet or lawnmowers. One of the most common issues with sprinklers is misalignment or breakage from a collision.
